Carl's late winner sends Louth through in cup

Monday, January 18, 2010, 06:30

AFTER five weeks without a match due to the bad weather, Louth Town returned to action in the Central Midlands League Challenge Cup when Yorkshire Main were the visitors to Park Avenue.

Although the snow had gone, the pitch was still heavily sanded in places following the persistent rain that had fallen for hours before kick-off.

It was still a credit to groundsman Steve Leafe and his helpers, who had worked tirelessly to get the game on.

The first half was a tight affair with relatively few chances.

Yorkshire Main were the first to threaten when striker Stephen Newton headed wide.

Town were fortunate not to go behind after 15 minutes when Curtis Walker caught Phil Winter in possession midway inside his own half before advancing and sending his shot wide, with Craig Wherry well beaten in the home goal.

Danny Kilmore did well just a minute later, but his goal-bound effort was blocked by Hanson.

The home side went close again on 23 minutes when new signing Jordan Southwell saw his powerful shot well saved.

The best chance of the half fell to Louth on 28 minutes when Smith hit a corner onto the head of Carl Martin, who somehow nodded wide with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Town looked to step up the pace at the start of the second half and began to create many more opportunities. Jordan Southwell and Kilmore both went close for Louth as the pressure mounted.

Town manager Paul Walden made a triple substitution after an hour, and the move nearly paid dividends immediately as all three subs combined before Jamie Rowbotham shot narrowly wide.

On 80 minutes, just as it looked like the tie was heading for a replay, Town scored when Mark Woods' excellent corner was headed powerfully into the top corner by Martin.
