Dad and son shine in Kenwick opener

Saturday, March 13, 2010, 06:30

FATHER and son partnership Dave and Lewis Hackett teamed up with Diana Watkinson and Joe Howden to scoop the opening mixed competition of the year at Kenwick Park Golf Club.

After a long cold snowy winter, the captains Clive James and Lynda Cahalin were delighted to be greeted by wall to wall sunshine and 80 competitors for the event.

The competition, with two scores to count on each hole, gave each player the opportunity to purchase a free 'chuck' as a get out of trouble card for one shot in the round.

These 'chucks' raised over £80 for St. Andrew's Children's Hospice and the local Lifeboat stations, the captains' chosen charities for this year.

The Hacketts, Watkinson and Howden took top spot with 81 points, while second spot went to Chris and Alex Davies with Peter and Sue Guilliatt who scored 80 points.

Beaten into third place on a countback were Bob and Jane Briggs, Walt Rogerson and David Gelsthorpe. Alistair and Julie Harvey with Mike and Lesley Burton claimed fourth place with 79.

Jeanette Stephenson was nearest the pin on the second for the ladies and Chris Davies took the honours for the men on the 12th hole.

Malcolm Crow celebrated a hole in one at the 144-yard second hole when his shot went straight into the hole without landing on the green first. Coincidentally his wife Sandra birdied this hole as well.

This hole is proving very popular at the moment as Peter Cahalin also had a hole in one here two weeks ago.

The ladies also kicked off the new season with a stableford. Christine Rochford (16) won the silver division with 32 points, and Wendy Green (19) with 31 took second place on a countback from Val Pattinson (18).

The lady captain Lynda Cahalin (28) was victorious in the bronze with 32. Carol Morrell (25) came second with 26 on a countback from Anne Gardiner (25).

Kate Roberts had a wonderful game of golf for the first medal of the year with 103-29=74 which gave her victory and reduced her handicap by one shot. Diana Watkinson (28) with a net 78 took the second spot. Jenny Baxter (13) was third and also won the best gross for her 92-13=79. Julie Harvey (12) came fourth.

The Kenwick Park Ladies Mail on Sunday team faced a stiff test in the first match of this year's competition being drawn away at Seacroft. A team of loyal supporters and caddies braved icy cold conditions to help the players to an excellent 3-2 victory.

The Men's Section saw Howard Gobey produced a great round of 72-5=67 to win Division One of the March medal and the best gross. Simon Lidgard (7) was second with 70 from Ron Irwin (9) with 71.

Michael Winney had a great game scoring 92-24=68 to win Division Two. Paul Marsden (21) was second with 71 just knocking Graham Sykes (13) into third on a countback.
