Thursday, March 11, 2010, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town School of Excellence Under-10s made a bright start and converted it into a 2-1 success against their Scunthorpe United counterparts at the Oasis Academy Wintringham.

Stephenson and Aldrich dominated midfield, playing some lovely passes out to Meiwald and Potts out on the wings.

Burchell made intelligent runs to create space for his team mates.

Meiwald nearly scored when he let fly with a terrific shot from the edge of the area which cannoned down off the crossbar, but no Town player was able to take advantage.

Aldrich, Burchell and Stephenson all went close but the first period somehow managed to finish goalless.

Town got their reward midway through the second period when Stephenson scored after some good build-up work that involved Keast, Potts and Meiwald, who put in a great ball for Stephenson to rifle home from the edge of the area.

A great throw by keeper Adam Nadin sent Goddard on his way down the left and he delivered a quality pass to Stephenson, who drilled the ball across the face of the Scunthorpe goal, but nobody could force the ball home.

Scunthorpe made some quick counter-attacks but solid defending by Foster and Aldrich, plus some good goalkeeping by Nadin, kept them out.

The third period started with Scunthorpe pushing for an equaliser. However, the young Mariners were standing firm in all departments, with Burchell defending well from the front and tracking back into midfield whenever he saw danger.

Burchell scored Town's second goal on the counter attack. Aldrich stole possession and played Burchell through one-on-one with the Scunthorpe keeper, and he coolly slotted the ball home.

Scunthorpe grabbed a lifeline when Town failed to close down a player on the edge of the box. The Scunthorpe player hit the ball first time, giving Nadin no chance, to reduced the arrears.

It lifted Scunthorpe but Town defended magnificently, especially Taylor, who headed the ball away from an opposition player's feet after he had fallen down making a tackle.

As always, Foster was making some strong but fair challenges to break up Scunthorpe attacks.

The fourth period was end-to-end stuff. A good ball from Keast found Goddard on Town's left and he put in a low cross for Burchell, who was denied by a well-timed tackle.

Nadin was called upon to pull off a cracking save to preserve Town's lead.

In the last seconds, Scunthorpe might feel hard done by after a penalty appeal was waved away after one of their forwards went down under pressure in Town's box.

GRIMSBY Under-Nines delivered an admirable performance despite being beaten 5-4 by a strong Scunthorpe outfit.

Harvey Cartwright made some great saves in goal and was well protected by Charlie Bratley and Kain Stephenson in front of him for most of the game.

Finn Walker, Brandon Buckley, Aidan Bass, Emil Powles, Alfie Usher and Jack Pargeter all performed well in midfield, with Walker, Bass and Usher finding the net.

Walker's goal was a highly pressurised penalty kick after Buckley had been fouled and Bass scored with a 20-yard strike into the top corner.

Usher's goal was a cool finish after a swift Grimsby counter attack.

Trialist Jack Tasker did well in midfield and as a striker, with Owen Parker also making his mark with a strong display, capped off with a well-taken goal after robbing a defender.

GRIMSBY Under-11s travelled to Scunthorpe for only their second 11-a-side game and were undone 2-1 with two late goals.

Neither team took hold of the game in the first quarter, both working hard to retain possession.

As the game settled down, Town started to take control, with DeGruchy showing ability going forward, with a great strike from 20 yards which rattled the top corner of the woodwork.

This early effort seemed to spur Town, who dominated the second quarter, with all pressure on the Scunthorpe goal.

Finnegan, showing good determination out wide after a good pass from Sawyer down the line, cut inside but saw his shot saved by the keeper.

Town continued to press with DeGruchy again shooting from distance. The keeper could only parry, with Charlie Wilkinson following up well to score on the rebound.

As the game continued into the third quarter, Town defended well with Mawer and Hopkins looking strong and organised at the back.

Town had several corners delivered with quality but could not be converted.

Towards the end Town stepped off the gas a little and allowed Scunthorpe to apply the pressure and they hit thebar from distance.

With five minutes to go, Scunthorpe pressed forward and Town were punished with two similar goals which were lofted in and tapped home after a scramble in the six-yard box.

It was a harsh result in a game which Town dominated in spells but couldn't find the second goal.

But, for only the second game at 11-a-side, Town showed good organisation and are adapting well.

GRIMSBY Town Under-12s battled well against a strong Scunthorpe side but lost 3-0 in a bruising derby match.

It began badly when an early corner was poorly defended, leading to the opening goal.

Boswell and Moody were linking well up front but Grimsby found chances hard to come by.

Coulten struck a superb free-kick which rattled the bar and Tomlinson was unlucky not to convert a well-worked short corner between Stewart and Stevenson.

The visitors extended the lead, breaking quickly and punishing a lack of concentration with a good finish from a long, straight pass.

Despite the setback, Grimsby continued to battle and play football but found the physicality of Scunthorpe difficult to break down.

In injury time, tired legs showed and Scunthorpe got their third against the run of play.

McKeon looked assured down the left, Stevenson was bright and creative and Johnson made another fantastic brave save.

TOWN Under-13s played at Scunthorpe on Sunday and came away with a well-deserved 2-0 victory against their previously unbeaten opponents.

The first 25-minute period was quite even, with Scunthorpe's more direct style proving dangerous at set pieces.

In the second period the young Mariners increased the tempo and took the lead through Lewis Collins with a 25-yard shot in to the bottom corner at the end of a good passing move.

The third period was again quite even but as, Scunthorpe pushed up to try to get the equaliser, Grimsby caught them on the break and trialist Luke Aldridge finished well from another good move.

Grimsby defended well to protect their lead as Scunthorpe tried desperately to get back in to the game.

Collins, captain on the day, led by example from midfield.

Matty Dale gave another assured display but overall it was an excellent team performance by Grimsby, who tried to play football throughout.

TOWN Under-14s avenged an earlier 3-2 defeat to Scunthorpe with a resounding 7-1 victory.

It came on the back of a performance of commitment and quality finishing.

Both sides made some strong challenges early in the game, which set the tone for the game.

Jacob Denton, Chris Burgess and Cameron Smith all made good tackles when Scunthorpe threatened.

Paul Walker was a constant threat, with his pace up front.

Tom Charlesworth swung over a corner and Paul Walker headed home.

It was the second period where Town did the damage. A Josh Garner pass played in Mikey Forman who finished well 2-0.

Walker got his and, when trialist Jack Whitlock was brought down in the penalty area, Walker scored from the spot for his hat-trick to make it 4-0.

Will Mumby-Croft then added number five , before Jack Whitlock made it 6-0.

Town were impressive in their passing and movement but Scunthorpe pulled one back after Town failed to clear their lines.

Tom Charlesworth then scored a 25-yarder that flew into the top corner.

Will Appleby stepped up from the Under-13s and did well and Cameron Smith had a good game.

TOWN Under-15s gave an excellent attacking display against rivals Scunthorpe, dominating the midfield area throughout, but went down 4-3.

They created numerous chances but came away defeated after repeated defensive errors again cost the side.

Rob Bryant hit a well-taken hat-trick for Town, who peppered the Scunthorpe goal throughout.

Lewis Smith, Jack Griffin, Andy Ross and Will Peers all gave strong performances in midfield for Town.
