We will get better - Woods

Monday, October 26, 2009, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town caretaker boss Neil Woods was pleased with the character his players showed to put in an improved second-half performance against league leaders Bournemouth on Saturday.

Woods' first game in charge ended in a 3-1 defeat, but he feels there are positives to take from the game into Friday night's clash against Accrington Stanley at Blundell Park.

Alan Connell and Paul Linwood's own goal put the Cherries 2-0 up at the break, but Linwood's header five minutes into the second half pulled a goal back for the Mariners.

Town matched the performance of the league leaders for the final half-hour, but Brett Pitman's spectacular overhead kick for Bournemouth three minutes from time wrapped up the win.

Woods said: "The questions were asked at half-time. Have we got what it takes to get out of this situation, or do we roll over?

"When the second goal went in, some might have seen four or five going in, but that didn't happen.

"The players showed great character. We got a little bit of a break with our goal, but then for 25-30 minutes we were as good if not better than Bournemouth.

"We still need to be better organised. We can't gift teams goals like the first one.

"The shape of the team is still okay. It wasn't fabulous, but it's getting better.

"I still want us to play a lot more with the ball and control the game more."

Woods was delighted with the response of his players following Mike Newell's dismissal last weekend but has not yet decided whether he will apply for the managerial vacancy.

"I enjoyed it, but I am no closer to making a decision as to whether I would want the managerial job.

"I'm very pleased with the reaction I've had from the players in the second-half at 2-0 down.

"We've tried to do a lot of work in a very short period of time and the players were devastated in the dressing room, devastated that they have come to face to team that are top of the league and not come away with something.

"Our strikers are getting in good areas to score goals. On another day, Jean-Louis would have buried the chances he had."
