Newell: Loans could revitalise Town pair

Saturday, October 10, 2009, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town boss Mike Newell is hoping a spell out on loan will breathe new life into young forwards Danny North and Peter Bore.

The pair were told yesterday they could move on temporarily after failing to cement a regular first-team spot.

Newell believes the duo need a change of scenery after spending the vast majority of their careers at Blundell Park.

Bore has been out on loan before, having a brief spell at York City at the beginning of last season.

But North, who came through the ranks alongside Bore, has spent his whole career at his home-town club.

The Mariners manager feels the chance to experience new surroundings may be just what the youngsters need.

Their likely departures also frees up space in the Town squad for Newell to bring in fresh faces himself.

The Town boss said: "I'm keen to freshen it up a bit and letting Danny and Pete out gives me more leeway to bring someone in.

"It's not a case of showing anyone the door. I just think they would benefit from a change of scenery.

"They have both been here since they were kids and sometimes when you spend all your time at one club, you can go stale.

"They are possibly in a bit of a comfort zone and they've not really done enough consistently to stay in the first-team – it's just not happening for them at the minute.

"We know they both have ability and they are not bad lads.

"It just gives them a chance to see what life's like elsewhere.

"It may be they come back fresher and it does them good or they may end up liking it that much that it turns permanent."

North's contract is due to run out next summer and he already has one goal in 10 appearances this season – last month's winner against Hereford.

Bore, meanwhile, broke back into the team recently but couldn't hold down a place. His contract at Town still has 18 months to run.

Both players were part of the successful Youth side that won the Midlands Youth Cup in 2006 and another member of that team is now back at Town on a permanent basis.

Youngster Jammal Shahin has impressed Newell following a trial spell and he has now signed until the end of the season.

And while the manager feels North and Bore may be better served out on loan, he reckons Shahin can add something to his squad.

Newell went on: "Jammal has signed for us until the end of the season.

"He has done well since returning. He has a good attitude in training and is a fit lad who will get even fitter once he settles back into proper training.

"We've seen something in him and hopefully it will work out for both us and the lad."
