Exclusive Jack Barlow interview tomorrow

Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 18:00

CHECK out tomorrow's Telegraph for an exclusive interview with former Grimsby Town School of Excellence star Jack Barlow.

Barlow is Hull City bound - and you can read his thoughts tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Town received a good fee for Barlow, according to chairman John Fenty.

The Mariners chief revealed at the weekend that Barlow had followed skipper Ryan Bennett out of Blundell Park.

He believes the club got a better deal than if the 15-year-old's switch had gone through a tribunal – though wouldn't confirm a figure the Telegraph believes to be in excess of £100,000.

The youngster, who was handed a senior appearance in pre-season at Winterton Rangers aged just 14 by former boss Mike Newell, has attracted attention from a host of Premier League sides in the past 12 months.

But he has now crossed the Humber to team up with the Tigers and Mr Fenty believes the presence of former Town assistant boss Stuart Watkiss at the KC Stadium may have played its part.

The chairman said: "Maybe Jack Barlow's move came about because Stuart Watkiss knows about him. He is now with Hull, of course, at their academy.

"The facts are that Phil Brown initially contacted me through Mike Newell and he registered his interest in Jack.

"The situation with Jack is that, at 15 years old, he is a free agent. The club didn't have a hold on Jack.

"To that extent, if Hull said they wanted him, they could have made a move and it would go to tribunal and we would get very little in the way of compensation.

"Case evidence gives us a clue of the amount we'd get and it would be a small amount.

"Given that there was interest from Hull, I spoke to their chairman Paul Duffen.

"He reaffirmed their interest and I asked if he would put it in writing. We made a counter proposal to that and then we accepted something in between.

"There is a small amount up front and there are a further two that consummate the first guaranteed payment.

"The rest is relative to Jack making first-team appearances and progressing in his career."
