Smith: I am loving Youth team venture

Wednesday, December 02, 2009, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town School of Excellence coach Adam Smith has praised his assistants and all those involved in the Youth team set up amid changes to the club's structure following Neil Woods' appointment as manager of the senior team.

A reshuffle of backroom staff at the club is underway, with assistant manager Brian Stein the first casualty; he left the club by mutual consent on Monday and has been replaced by Chris Casper, who joined the fold as first team coach and reserves boss yesterday.

Now Woods has moved to senior duties, his successor as Youth team boss has yet to be revealed and the move is likely to affect Smith, who has managed the young Mariners on a temporary basis since Woods took charge of the first team as caretaker boss five weeks ago following Mike Newell's sacking.

And Smith has not ruled out the option of wanting to continue his involvement with the team.

He told the Telegraph: "I'm not sure I am ready to step in as coach for the long term, but, whether it is me or someone else in charge, I'm sure we will move forward.

"I have really enjoyed it. The lads have made it easy for us by responding to the situation well.

"Although the performances have been hit and miss, we have had some good results.

"And we are still in the Midlands Youth Cup and the Youth Alliance Cup, which we hope to defend."

The current Youth team coach added that he is a staunch supporter of Woods' appointment as Town boss.

"He is a football man and wants his teams to play attractive football – that is what he achieved with the Youth team and they managed to win silverware last season," he said.

A 4-0 home drubbing at the hands of Doncaster on Friday halted the Youth team's charge of three wins in as many games in the Youth Alliance League.

Smith said: "A few of the lads were taught a lesson in the game. Not only do you have to take your chances in football, but teams will also punish you when you make mistakes."

Youth's next game is away on Saturday at Notts County, who beat the Mariners 2-1 at the start of the season.
