Young Town guns fire six

Thursday, November 12, 2009, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town School of Excellence Under-16s faced their rivals from Premiership Hull City and put in a superb performance to win 6-2 in what was an entertaining and at times fiercely-fought game at home.

Hull took a seventh-minute lead after a defensive lapse when the Hull player finished well.

However, a minute later, Callum Walker scored to make it 1-1.

Both teams were passing the ball around, and enjoying good possession.

Will Mumby-Croft then won the ball and crossed for Walker to fire home from close range for 2-1.

Town then hit the bar when Jacob Denton volleyed from close range.

Hull then equalised in the 20th minute when, from a corner, slack marking allowed a free header for 2-2.

After the break Caine Winfarrah finished well, after Fraser Finley played him in, for 3-2.

The tempo increased, with tackles flying in, and Ellis Humble, Josh Garner and Tom Charlesworth were in commanding form.

Josh Garner fired into the top corner for 4-2 and the young Mariners, now well on top, went further ahead when Charlesworth fired in from 20 yards.

Paul Walker then headed home from a Garner cross to complete the scoring.

The game became physical but the Town lads were well disciplined in the face of some fierce challenges.

After some indifferent displays in recent weeks, this was a team performance of effort, commitment and a willingness to work for each other, whilst the whole squad did well.

Humble, Charlesworth and Garner set the tone with some resounding tackles.

Another derby awaits on Sunday at Lincoln City.

TOWN U9S 3 HULL 3

GRIMSBY Town School of Excellence Under-Nines showed great character to come from back from being 3-1 down in the last quarter to draw 3-3 with their Hull counterparts.

It was no mean feat from the boys, who were up against a big, strong and technically good Hull side with a fantastic goalkeeper.

Town's own goalkeeper, Harvey Cartwright, had a brilliant game also and made some superb saves throughout the game.

The first quarter finished 0-0 and the second quarter 1-1, with Emil Powles equalising direct from a corner for Town.

By the start of the fourth quarter, Town were 3-1 down after conceding two sloppy goals.

Great work from Powles, and then Alfie Usher, lead to Brandon Buckley making it 3-2, before a tremendous save from the Hull keeper denied Buckley an equaliser.

Luckily for Town, the Hull keeper made an uncharacteristic error and Buckley was on hand to take advantage and make it 3-3.

TOWN U10S 1 HULL CITY U10S 1

PLAYED in perfect conditions, the Under 10s of Grimsby Town and Hull City put on an excellent match and shared the honours in a 1-1 draw.

Although both sides played a nice brand of fast, flowing football, there was a real competitive edge to proceedings as neither team gave an inch in this closely fought encounter.

In the early stages, as is usually the case, the Grimsby youngsters were extremely bright and really took the match to Hull.

Kai Morris and Keelan Taylor looked in command at the back while Jordan Potts, Jack Stephenson, Reece York and Jan Meiwald were more than a match for a first-rate Hull side.

Grimsby went ahead in the first period after a period of sustained pressure. York found Meiwald on the right wing and his outstanding pace was evident as he beat two players before hitting a dangerous hard, low cross which was touched on by striker Leo Kilday and finished by the lively Potts to give Grimsby a deserved lead.

Grimsby would have extended their lead but shots from Stephenson and Potts were thwarted by the heroics of the Hull keeper.

The match continued at a great pace with players of great ability on display from both sides.

As expected, Hull did create opportunities but found defenders Morris, Taylor and Cameron Foster on top of their game, with Adam Nadin in goal putting in one of his best performances of the season.

In the end-to-end entertainment, Kilday in attack was also showing some of his best form to date as he lead the line well, holding the ball well for his support, with the pace of Meiwald always a threat.

The lovely dribbling skills of Potts constantly caused problems for the Hull back line.

With a little luck in front of goal, Grimsby would have scored a second, but the ball didn't quite run for Nicholas Keast as Grimsby exerted the pressure.

Hull equalised but Grimsby continued to play in the same way, showing a maturity on the ball beyond their young years.

However, with the gifted youngsters in Hull's side, they too were going for the winner.

Fortunately, Town found both Taylor and Foster cool and composed as they kept Hull at bay.

Grimsby applied late pressure with a flurry of corners in the dying seconds but, in the end, a draw was a fair result in what was an excellent advertisement for School of Excellence football as the boys showed true talent coupled with their obvious passion for the game.

TOWN U11S 1 HULL CITY U10S 4

THE Under 11 game at Hull City had to be abandoned with about eight minutes left due to torrential rain and hail with the north bank side leading 4-1.

Hull started brightly and put the Town defence under pressure, but Bailey Powles, Kyle Howett and Billy Merrison stuck to their task well and goal-keeper Lewis Tomlinson was alert to act as a sweeper on a couple of occasions.

Hull eventually took the lead when they latched on to a clearance and hammered in a shot off the inside of the post.

Town threatened when Joey Finnegan went close and strike partner Charlie Wilkinson had a fine game against his former club.

Hull then hit a purple patch, scoring three times in little more than five minutes, leaving the Town lads a little dispirited at half time.

A positive reaction was required and the players responded well to the coaches' rallying call.

As the rain worsened, the slick surface helped Town's passing game. Wilkinson had dropped back into midfield and, alongside Lewis, Lewis Hoad took control.

Lewis Graham went close before Hoad hammered in a ferocious drive to reduce the arrears.

Town lost keeper Tomlinson through injury which meant a reshuffle, but they continued to have the better of the action.

Skipper Tom Sawyer came more into the game and JJ Smith strengthened the back line as Town continued to take the game to their opponents.

The torrential rain and hail was having a detrimental effect on the youngsters on both sides and eventually both sets of coaching staff decided enough was enough and the players ran for shelter.

Hull City were a strong side but the Town youngsters acquitted themselves well.

Powles and Hoad had excellent games, whilst Charlie Wilkinson showed composure and creativity on the ball throughout.

TOWN U12 2 HULL U12 3

GRIMSBY Town Under-12s were narrowly edged out 3-2 by their north bank rivals.

Hull started strongly and made the most of the spare man their system created without testing Johnson who played well in goal.

As the half progressed, Grimsby were competing better and winning possession. But the Hull defence dealt with everything and Grimsby needed more care with the final ball.

Hull looked dangerous from set plays and scored when Town's defence were slow to react to the danger and the ball was volleyed home from close range.

Grimsby pressed with Boswell and Moody leading the line well, but Hull counter-attacked quickly and added a second goal.

This sparked a positive reaction and Tomlinson, Coulten and Stewart rallied, and moments later the move of the game saw Grimsby halve the deficit.

The commanding Gray won the ball down the right and played upfield to Boswell, who turned well and split the Hull defence with a well-weighted ball to Reece Moody, who showed great composure to fire the ball past the oncoming keeper.

Hull could have extended their lead had it not been for Pearson, who twice saved well.

Grimsby looked more likely to win and were unlucky not to draw level when Boswell volleyed against a post after good wing play by Thomas down the left.

Boswell again forced the keeper into a smart save from Stevenson's jinking run.

A momentary lapse of concentration saw Hull win possession and get the ball in behind Grimsby's left side quickly and finish well for 3-1.

Grimsby showed character and fight to get back into the game when a clever lob across the goal from Moody was met by a well-timed run and header from Sarbutt for 3-2.

All players showed good attitude, excellent work rate and determination and numerous chances were created.

More care on the final ball and better concentration would benefit the side but overall it was a positive performance.

TOWN U13S 0 HULL U13S 6

GRIMSBY Town Under-13s' unbeaten run came to an abrupt end in a 6-0 scoreline away at Hull.

In very wet and cold conditions, the Grimsby boys were 4-0 down after the first period.

The Hull side was physically and technically strong but the Grimsby performance was disappointing.

In the second period, Town conceded two further goals and only a strong performance from keeper Josh Smith kept the score down.

But the deteriorating weather conditions forced the abandonment of the match.

Josh Venney, playing in an unfamiliar left back position, also did well and kept going throughout the game.

TOWN U16S 2 HULL CITY U16 4

GRIMSBY Town Under-16s went down 4-2 at home.

Two goals were scores in an explosive opening two minutes.

Hull took the lead with a good finish after a misplaced Town pass on the edge of their own area left a shooting opportunity.

But Town went straight down the other end and equalised when good pressure from trialist Adam Shanks gave him an opportunity which he finished expertly.

The game settled down into an end-to-end affair, both keepers keeping busy, and Town had a Southwell goal disallowed for offside.

Hull took the lead again after 15 minutes with a good break down the right when a low cross was converted at the near post.

Town again responded and played some excellent football, with Pennington showing up well.

Josh Freeman showed great skill to beat a Hull defender on the byline and his cross was inches away from being converted by Southwell.

Town took the game to Hull in the second half and dominated, with Freeman and Southwell going close before a superb cross from trialist Jamie Hanson was finished by Southwell.

With Hanson, Ramsden, Mills and Blankley controlling the midfield, Town looked the more likely to go on and win the game.

But Hull took the lead again with 10 minutes left with a header from a free kick.

Despite a good effort, the equaliser would not come and Hull completed the scoring in the final minute when an inswinging free kick deceived everyone and found the net.

This was a good game between two well-matched teams with all the Town players putting in good performances.

The three trialists, Conroy, Hanson and Shanks, all did well.
