Atkinson: We need to be so solid

Friday, March 12, 2010, 06:30

MARINERS defender Rob Atkinson says Grimsby Town owe their loyal band of travelling fans a good performance at Morecambe tomorrow.

The 22-year-old is ready to play his part in avenging the mistakes Town's back-line made in the 4-2 defeat at Crewe on Tuesday night.

After a run of just two defeats in nine away games in the league since Neil Woods took over managerial duties, initially on a caretaker basis in October, the last two trips on the road – at Dagenham and Crewe – have ended in convincing defeats.

And Town need to plug any leaky holes in defence if they are going to pick up enough points on their travels to keep the fans' hopes of league survival alive.

Atkinson said: "The fans have been superb away from home.

"They always come out in good numbers.

"The last couple of away games we've not been as solid as we have been.

"We want to get back to the kind of away form that we've shown this season – being nice and solid at the back.

"That could provide the platform for us to get the three points we need at Morecambe."

The Beverley-born defender may play alongside Paul Linwood in defence against the Shrimps tomorrow, as Southampton loanee Olly Lancashire is a doubt with a bruised foot.

"We'll have to see how Olly's foot has reacted, but if he can't make it, Linners and I will be ready for the task ahead," Atkinson said.

"It's going to be a difficult game. They have two big lads up front who they like to play the ball up to, so we'll have to make sure we're ready for that."

The ex-Barnsley player added: "Crewe were one of the best sides we've played this season. They had pace in the wings, midfield and up front.

"But Morecambe will probably play a different style to Crewe and be more direct.

"We got a good result on Saturday, but took a few steps back at Crewe. However, we'll get that out of our minds and take the positives from the Shrewsbury game."

ROCK: Rob Atkinson believes the Town defence will have to be back at their best against the Shrimps at Christie Park tomorrow.
