Stockdale ready for starters

Saturday, March 13, 2010, 06:30

ROBBIE Stockdale is pushing for a place in the Grimsby Town team at Morecambe today after almost six months out of action.

Stockdale made the bench at Crewe in midweek and is set to travel to the west coast looking for a first Mariners outing since Torquay in mid-September after a series of operations.

The former Scotland international, who netted on Town's last visit to Morecambe in a 2-1 FA Cup first round defeat 16 months ago, is delighted to be back involved after the worst lay-off in his long career.

And being the last Town player to score at Christie Park, he hopes his goalscoring prowess from right-back could hold sway with boss Neil Woods.

Stockdale said: "I'm prolific at Morecambe so maybe the manager might chuck me on up front for the last 10 minutes to get a goal.

"Seriously, though, it was good to be back and nice to be involved with the lads again at Crewe.

"A couple of weeks ago I was back on the training pitch and back with the lads having banter again.

"Getting stuck into some physical contact in training was good.

"Then I made the squad for Crewe.

"The result was obviously disappointing but on a personal note it was good to be back.

"It was the first operation I've had as a footballer.

"I've never had a bad injury, thankfully, in my career so far.

"At first we thought it was just a run-of-the-mill double hernia operation.

"I had always had pain in the groin since pre-season.

"I had cortisone injections a few times to play in games at the start of the season.

"It just wasn't getting any better.

"The theory was that the hernia operation would take the strain off my groins but unfortunately it didn't really happen.

"I had to then go in for groin surgery, which isn't pleasant at the best of times.

"Hopefully it's behind me now and I'm getting fitter and sharper each day in training."

Having only just returned to the squad, the 30-year-old is realistic he may have to bide his time to get a place from the start and take his appearance tally for the campaign into double figures.

It won't stop him backing whoever makes the team at Morecambe today, with relegation a real worry for everyone at Blundell Park.

He went on: "We'll see what happens today – it's up to the manager if I play or not.

"I'll go to Morecambe and if I'm not involved I'll still be there backing the lads. That's the kind of person I am.

"I've known some players in the past who, when they aren't playing, hope the team doesn't perform to give them a better chance of a game.

"That's certainly not how we are at this club.

"Whoever is on the sidelines gives their full backing for the rest of the team.

"The club's the most important thing and staying up is the priority for everyone.

"It's another big game today and games are running out so we need to pick up points."
