The best is yet to come
After an inconsistent start to the season, the 25-year-old was one of Town's heroes on Saturday, scoring a goal and making two others in the win over Shrewsbury.
The ex-Toulouse forward then netted again in the Mariners' 4-2 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday evening.
While Akpa Akpro began Saturday's match on the right wing and was then moved up front to play off targetman Lee Peacock, the reverse happened on Tuesday – showing the versatility, or perhaps unpredictability, of the player.
Woods commented: "I was very pleased with Jean-Louis on Saturday.
"If you watch him in training in a more comfortable and relaxed environment, his finishing and touch are getting better, and he caused Shrewsbury a lot of problems – he got the penalty, he got a goal, and as a centre-forward you can't do a lot more than that.
"We've done a lot of work in training the last couple of weeks on playing one of the strikers a little bit looser off the target man.
"The work we've been doing is to switch the play and move it quicker. When you do that and you get Jean-Louis facing players and running at them then he's a real handful.
"However, he has to learn the art of playing with his back to goal a little better for me. Once he faces people and runs at them then he shows his pace and his ability and that position enables him to do that a little more."
Woods' plan worked like a charm against the Shrews, as Akpa Akpro's high energy levels paved the way for Town's first win in 26 league matches.
On the striker's performance at Crewe, Woods added: "I thought Jean was very lively first half and he took his goal well.
"But as the game went on he stopped running at people like he was doing earlier when he was causing problems."
