Tuesday, March 09, 2010, 06:30

GRIMSBY ice hockey star Holly Cornford has been appointed captain of the Great Britain Under-18 women's team.

Cornford has been making waves in the last 12 months, and even made her debut for the GB senior squad against France just before Christmas.

The U18 team travel to Budapest this week to play in the European Four Nation's tournament against Belgium, Slovakia and hosts Hungary.

She said: "I'm absolutely thrilled. My first job as captain, along with head coach Sean Alderson, is to decide who are to be the two assistant captains.

"This is not the easiest of jobs as I've played with the team for three years and look to my team-mates as friends."

This week's trip to Budapest will be the first time the GB U18 squad have played on the international stage proper.

The side have aspirations of playing in the World Championships in 2011, and a good performance in the tournament would be a step in the right direction.
