Shotokan showdown

Thursday, March 11, 2010, 06:30

KAIZEN No-Michi hosted its first Shotokan karate weekend course.

Sensei Andrew Jones (fourth Dan) and Sensei Jackie Jones (third Dan) led the event at Hereford Technology School with the help of visiting expert Sensei Howard Taylor (fourth Dan) from the shotokan.co.uk Karate-Do Organisation.

The Grimsby club's course attracted local students as well as karate players from as far afield as the West Midlands.

The first session consisted of kion (basic movements), and an introduction of an alternative kata (forms) to Shotokan students.

In the second session, the students were in for a treat when Sensei Taylor shared his kumite (sparring) skills and knowledge.

Sensei Taylor – a two-time SKI National Kumite Champion – has had major success in national and international championships and is the current SCUKO and FEKO champion.

He also holds a European Bronze medal and was part of the men's team that finished second in the 2004 Ukraine Championships as well as collecting gold in the men's team rotation.
