Rivals end Bryants' double title charge

Wednesday, March 03, 2010, 06:30

BRYANTS Carpets' chances of retaining their RCS Landscapes Intermediate Snooker League title took another blow with a 5-1 defeat at old rivals Ray Edmonds B.

After losing to title challengers Locate Supplies by the same scoreline in their previous match, Bryants might have fancied a different opponent for their next encounter.

It did not start well for Bryants as John Ashford-Smith and Chris Sutton proved too good in the first two frames, with Sutton hitting the week's highest break – a 56 clearance.

Alan Edmonds and Tony Miller kept the momentum going and made it 4-0.

After Mick Ponsonby and Alan Robertson made it 5-0, Bryants faced the prospect of being slammed by their greatest rivals.

However Danny Rock and Daz Potter managed to hold it together as they finally won a frame – but their team's championship hopes look doomed.

Simon Devaney Builders were also fast out the blocks as Matt Devaney, Stuart Carrington (54,40), Danny Harrison and Luke Maddison put them 4-0 up at Icing Cabin.

Terry Burns and Tony Aisthorpe responded for Steve Singleton's team by taking the last two frames.

Steve Donner, Rick Bass, Daz Stansfield and Paul West all managed 2-0s as Matric kept the pressure on at the top of the table by beating TR Carpets 5-1.

Sitting pretty at the top are Cue World after Mike Gibney, Daz Barraclough, Jack Stinson, Danny Reynolds, Ivan Harvey and Bob Reeves gave them a 5-0 lead over Grimsby Cons.

Euan Hunter and Andy Hardy took the last frame to avoid the slam.

A last-board 2-0 from Ian Hogarth and Steve Ceclich was the difference as Peter Hogarth & Sons edged stuttering Stamford 4-2.

After losing the first frame at RCS Landscapes A, Birds Eye needed two snookers on the pink in the next.

But Mick Boyington duly got them before partner Stu McLellan potted a great pink and black to level the match.

Inspired by that, Scott Templeman and Tony Jagger won the next two to put Birds Eye 3-1 up.

However, there was another twist to the match. Kev and Daz North took the last two frames as RCS rescued a draw.

THE top clash in Section B of the RCS Landscapes Intermediate Snooker League saw West End B complete an impressive fightback against Webbonet Website Design.

John Parrott and Danny Barrass had no difficulty in making it 2-0 to Webbonet, but Andrew Warner and Alan Porritt began the fightback and made it 2-2.

Paul Taylor and Martin Shaw were too good in the last board and clinched a great 4-2 win for the West Enders.

Carr Lane Social A remained top of the table after a 5-1 home win against Clee Bowls N.

Colin Crosby, Bryan Riley, Kevin Munson and Joe Goodfellow won 2-0.

Matching this scoreline were Hainton A, who had Craig Smith, Daz Evans, Yan de Gruchy and Tony Lamberto on form in a 5-1 win at Crazy Potters.

Cambridge F faced a tough trip to RCS Landscapes B but came away with a great result.

John and Keith Phillipson, and Paul and John Spall, took the first four frames to leave their hosts in shock.

Robbie and Richard Bell pulled one back for the Landscapes before Craig Allerston and Garry White completed a superb 5-1 win.

A highly entertaining encounter saw Cambridge Graduates run out 4-2 winners over Grimsby Police B.

Terry Robinson and Dave 'the magician' Richardson were on target in that victory.

Westlands D enjoyed a 4-2 win at Express Appliance, a match that saw Rob Baker making a 38 break.

Also, Ken Hayes and Alec Cowie won 2-0 for the visitors.

An opening 2-0 from Stamford B's Gaz Dannatt and Mike Lawton guided them to a 4-2 victory at West End D.
