Recognition for CASA youngsters

Saturday, February 27, 2010, 06:30

TALENTED young swimmers from the area have been recognised with invitations to a high-profile training programme.

Following Cleethorpes & Scunthorpe Aquatics swimmers selection onto the ASA England Talent Development Programme – part of the ASA's support to enhance the pathway through to World Class programmes – a number of the club's swimmers have been invited to attend an additional session as part of the Beacon Programme investment in the ASA North East Region.

The programme, which has already consisted of three one-day clinics (Level One) targeted at 12 and 13-year-old athletes and three two-day camps (Level Two) targeted at 14 and 15-year-old athletes, now extends to an invitation to attend a 'Long Course' training session in April, at the John Charles Aquatic Centre's 50-metre swimming pool.

'Long Course training' is essential to the swimmers' long-term development as all major competitions, from County Championships upwards, take place in a 50-metre pool.

Previously the programme covered, not only pool training and skills, but also nutrition, time/lifestyle management and mental skills along with a parent's lecture including advice on diet, health and schooling and how to be a good swimmer's parent.

The swimmers were chosen from the North East Region based on their performance at either National Championships or on their current regional ranking.

The CASA swimmers chosen to take part are Callum Gladding (13), Josh Jones (13), Maisie Legge (12) and Oliver Webster (12) at Level One. Leah Altoft (14), who is swimming within Level Two of the Beacon Programme, has been invited to swim every Saturday morning at Leeds. This will add to her local training and enhance her progress along with the other top swimmers within the region.

The CASA swimmers will not be travelling to the training in April alone as their coaches, Dan Higgon and Dave Leeman, have also been invited along to take part as members of the coaching team.

This weekend sees the 2010 British Gas Yorkshire Swimming Association Age Group Championships continuing at the Sir John Charles Centre for Sport.
