Smith: Team needs action

Thursday, January 07, 2010, 06:30

GRIMSBY Town's Youth Team are hoping the big freeze around North Lincolnshire won't put paid to their return to action on Saturday.

The young Mariners are due to make the short trip to Scunthorpe for a 'mini' Youth Alliance North East Conference derby against the Iron after a four-week break over the festive season.

But the snowy conditions could yet mean an extended lay-off.

And with no game scheduled the following weekend after the Youth Alliance third round clash at Macclesfield was put back until the end of the month, interim coach Adam Smith is anxious to get his team back playing.

He said: "It's been a long break for the lads of four weeks but in reality they have only had 10 days off in that time.

"We trained up until Christmas and then had them in for a couple of days in between Christmas and the New Year.

"They came back in on Monday this week and are in good shape and keen to get back playing.

"It might be hard to do that this week with Scunthorpe suffering similar weather to us.

"We have hardly seen Cheapside this week but it would be good to get the game on because we have a stop-start month.

"We don't have a game after this weekend because the Macclesfield cup tie is now later in the month at their request.

"But we also have to fit in a Midlands Youth Cup tie at Walsall and we have a rearranged away trip to Burton Albion.

"So when we do get going, it's going to be a busy time."

The wintry weather has affected the Youth team like the first team and they have also had to improvise in training.

Sessions running on Cleethorpes beach as well as indoor work have kept the players in trim after their festive break.

Smith added: "We've done a lot of fitness work but we also had help from various places in the area to do indoor football.

"We've been helped with the use of the Oasis Academy at Wintringham School and the PlaySport pitches as well.

"So everyone is in good spirits and the training has been different to keep things ticking over.

"But what we really want is to get back playing on Saturday."
